Social media users say they plan to view fewer posts and tighten their sharing circles in 2012. That’s a clear message that businesses need to focus on smarter sharing to connect more meaningfully with customers. So this year, make “less is more” your social media maxim.

Creativity is a powerful force within the human mind that allows business owners to think up innovative solutions to problems, artists to paint breath-taking murals, musicians to create gorgeous compositions, teams to brainstorm fresh marketing campaign ideas, and strategists to develop detailed plans on how to accomplish goals.
If you are left-brained dominant (logical, orderly, fact-finding), coming up with new creative ways of doing things is probably not on your bucket list of to-do’s for 2012. If you are right-brained (intuitive, prefer ideas to facts, idealistic), reading words like “quadratic equations” and “microsoft excel” probably gives you an insta-migraine. It’s ironic (but not surprising) that Alexander Graham Bell refused to have a phone in his office – claiming that his most famous invention was an intrusion of his real work as a scientist. Today –video chat, Google+, Facebook, Twitter, sales calls, etc. all play a part in our daily lives. With an overload of information, a telephone is really the least of our worries! The infinite amount of information at our fingertips requires that we become more personally in tune with ourselves and our thinking process.
When writing on the topic of focus, Bell elaborated “Concentrate all of your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.” I believe that Bell’s encouraging quote on focus is easier said than done! While social media and the abundance of information available online is extremely helpful in helping us move forward, these technological advances can also pose as MAJOR distractions.

It truly amazes me that businesses today still prevent sales teams from utilizing social media tools like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and others. Just last week, we interviewed several great sales candidates. Part of the skill-set we are looking for is someone who knows how to build relationships both offline through traditional networking AND online through the various social media tools available to all businesses today.
